About

“One of the last great coming-of-age stories society rarely gets to witness.”

For most young adults, moving out of the family home is a rite of passage. It is the moment when childhood gives way to independence, identity, friendship, love, responsibility, and the possibility of building a life of one’s own.

For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, that moment is far less certain.

THE BUDDY SYSTEM is a feature documentary that follows a group of young adults with Down syndrome, autism, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities as they leave home and attempt something many people take for granted: living independently.

Inside a pioneering residential community, lifelong friends become roommates, neighbors become family, and everyday challenges become extraordinary milestones. Whether learning to navigate relationships, hold jobs, manage conflict, pursue romance, or simply make decisions for themselves, each resident is confronting the universal question of what it means to grow up and build a meaningful life.

Funny, emotional, and deeply human, THE BUDDY SYSTEM is not a story about limitations. It is a story about possibility.

As parents learn to let go, residents learn to step forward, and a community learns to redefine what independence can look like, the film reveals that none of us truly make it alone.

At its heart, THE BUDDY SYSTEM is a celebration of friendship, belonging, and the courage it takes to become who you are.
